Meeting With Students

If you suspect plagiarism in the work of a multi-lingual writer (or any writer), meet with him or her to discuss the use of sources, citations, and paraphrasing. Ask him or her to bring the sources he or she used for the text to your meeting. From this type of discussion, you should be able to ascertain your student’s motivation for the misuse of sources. Be cautious of assuming cultural misunderstanding, however. As with any student, use such a meeting to better understand what the student thought he or she was doing rather than assuming intent or cultural influence.
