Some faculty decide to handle plagiarism cases without involving the Academic Honesty Office. Students sometimes agree to informal sanctions (for example, a grade deduction or even failure in the course) because they do not want a charge of plagiarism to appear in their disciplinary file. Students can certainly ask for advice from the Academic Honesty Office before deciding whether or not to agree with an informal resolution.
